Get Out There

Best Time to Visit Newer National Parks

We wrote a blog a couple of weeks ago about why you should visit state parks over national parks. We argued that they tend to be quieter and are undiscovered gems that will take your breath away.

But, at the same time, we understand that some people can’t be swayed. We get it; if you want to visit a national park, you want to visit a national park! It’s a better time to visit than it was even just a couple of weeks ago! Schools are fully back in session, meaning that parks are quiet. And the weather is cooling down.

The cooler weather is essential for visiting America’s newest national parks. The national parks were first established 152 years ago by Pres. Ulysses S. Grant. He established Yosemite “as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” It’s hard to believe that 152 years later, new parks are being founded, but we’re a country that loves our public lands!

New River Gorge National Park is the newest national park. It’s 70,000 acres of mountainous woods with beautiful waterfalls. The park is in Appalachia, and fall is one of the best times to visit! It’s quieter and cooler than the summer. And it has gorgeous fall foliage. It also has a mile-long steel arch bridge over the New River. It is the longest one in the Western Hemisphere. It has a wheelchair-accessible viewing deck to look at the stunning vista.

White Sands National Park is another newer park perfect for a visit now. Located in New Mexico, the days can be scorching. But it’s cooler now the summer months are over. If you want to see them at their most stunning, go at sunrise or sunset. The white sands take on the magnificent bright colors of the sky. If you want to treat the desert like a winter playground, you can sled down the sand dunes! You can bring a sled or buy one for $15-$25!

If you wait until winter, Gateway Arch National Park is a perfect option. The weather is mild, and this usually packed park is at its quietest. You can visit the top of the 630-foot Arch via a tram ride for $15. In the winter, you will have little to no wait for the ride!

No matter where you want to go, we recommend researching the park first! You never know the best time to visit or what you might want to pack into your car. We would never think of packing a sled for a desert, but we like saving money on our vacations! No matter where you choose, be sure the weather is suitable, and have a great time!
