Blue Zones May Be Fake, But Habits Are Healthy

Blue Zones are the areas of the world where people habitually live to be over 100 years old. People have studied them for years. They wanted to learn their secrets so we could all enjoy longer, healthier lives.

Earlier this month, we wrote about Saul Newman, who unlocked the truth behind Blue Zones: lying. People are alive on paper, but relatives are claiming dead people’s pensions. Additionally, many folks lie to seem older and more impressive.

The reality is a letdown. However, many of the lifestyle habits from the Blue Zones are beneficial to health and shouldn’t be ignored!

I think people who adhere to that type of lifestyle generally do well. And whether the actual blue zones are really blue zones, I’m not sure. [They] could be,” said Dr. Frank Lipman, a longevity researcher and doctor of functional medicine. “It’s pretty well known that the way, supposedly, people live in blue zones with community and moving their bodies and having some meaning in life, that all makes sense. And yes, those people do well.”

Dr. Lipman said his patients who follow supposedly common habits in the Blue Zones tend to be healthier. Whether people in the Blue Zones are following them is debatable. Mr. Newman pointed out that people in the Blue Zones drink far too much to be considered healthy. But other behaviors they preach may be useful.

Having a purpose in life and being part of a community with strong connections to others can help people stay healthy. Eating a moderate diet of nutritious food boosts health. So does having plenty of movement and getting enough sleep. Finally, feeling grateful and less stressed aids in well-being.

Doctors point out that “there is no longevity magic bullet.” Health and long life comes from many factors; it’s not about tricks like blocking red light or taking MTC oil. It doesn’t have to be high-tech or expensive. It’s about finding balance and peace, eating healthy, enjoying life and getting out, resulting in more exercise and camaraderie in the day.

It’s not hard or complex; it’s all about forming new habits, even if they’re small habits,” said Dr. John Cummins from Executive Medicine.

The Blue Zones might not have been living to extreme ages. But the habits we have learned from studying them are helpful and may help you live a longer, healthier life!
