Fish Oil Supplement May Slow Alzheimer’s for Some

Glucocil comes in the form of a softgel. The liquid in the softgel is fish oil. It’s one of Glucocil’s 14 clinically researched ingredients. We include it to aid heart and blood vessel health. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for heart health. Our fish oil is molecularly distilled to minimize odor and maximize purity and potency. There are many other reasons to add fish oil to your day. New research has made it even more appealing.

Researchers from Oregon Health & Science Univ. wondered if fish oil could help people who were at high risk for Alzheimer’s. Past research shows it can aid brain health and reduce the risk of developing brain lesions. The researchers wanted to know if taking fish oil could help after lesions appear.

For their study, researchers used 102 volunteers between the ages of 75 and 95. They had no signs of cognitive impairment. But they did have white matter lesions.

There was a placebo group and a group that took fish oil supplements every day for three years. Everyone in the study, both the placebo group and the supplement group, had an MRI at the start and end of the test. The MRI measured the degree of white matter lesions in their brain. After three years, both groups had slight reductions in the progression of lesions. But not enough for it to be “statistically significant.”

Overall, the fish oil didn’t appear to make much of a difference. But, for people carrying a gene linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, there was a big impact. There were “significant reductions” in the breakdown of nerve cells. That is a key sign of brain health.

One of the researchers called the results “remarkable” and wants a more extensive study with more participants. The researchers said their work showed that fish oil couldn’t help everyone stave off dementia. But it might be highly beneficial for some.

If you are genetically predisposed to Alzheimer’s, fish oil may be an excellent supplement. If you take Glucocil as suggested, it’s great news that you already take 2,400 milligrams of it a day! If you don’t have a higher risk for Alzheimer’s, this research doesn’t suggest that fish oil will protect you. However, it has many other benefits you can enjoy!
