Four Forms of Baklava—Including Savory

Baklava is a dessert most people with blood sugar concerns assume they can’t enjoy. The traditional version is high in carbs. But National Baklava Day is coming up. As you know, we never like to skip a holiday! These low-carb versions will help you celebrate. One turns baklava into a meaty main course!

Baklava Cookies

These cookies trade out the typical high-carb phyllo pastry and honey syrup for a low-carb short crust pastry and a low-sugar glaze with a touch of honey. But the nut and spice filling stays the same. So, when you take a bite, you get the unmistakable flavors of baklava without the high carb count. A serving has 109 calories, three grams of carbs, one gram of fiber and 10 grams of fat. Get the recipe.

Baklava Bars

We love bars as a dessert form. They are easy to bake, easy to portion and easy to eat! The only problem with bars is that it’s easy to go back for seconds when they are good, and these ones are really good! These bars have a shortbread base and can be stored on the counter, and they don’t contain eggs or cream for up to five days. For longer periods, they should be in the fridge. But you won’t have them for more than five days! A serving has 185 calories, 3.8 grams of carbs, 1.9 grams of fiber and 17.4 grams of fat. Get the recipe. If you have ever eaten baklava and thought, “Well, yes, I like it, but I wish it was a chicken wing,” we have the recipe for you. While we think you have to be pretty out there to think of this recipe, we’ll admit it: we’re fans of recipes that mix sweet and spicy, savory and sweet. And this recipe keeps all of the traditional sweetness and nuttiness, ramps up the spice a little and is perfect for game day. They are nicely baked wings that check all the boxes for baklava, except they’re wings instead of dessert. While this sounds like a prank, they are tasty and you’ll be thrilled you tried them! A serving has 604 calories, five grams of carbs, two grams of fiber and 39 grams of fat. Get the recipe.

Baklava Cake

Returning to the world of dessert, we have a soft bundt cake that is made as an upside-down cake with a finishing drizzle. The sweetened nuts and butter mixture are added to the pan before the cake batter. When the cake is turned out, they’re on tip. Make sure your pan is greased well! Once it’s cooled, you top it with a drizzle of sugar-free honey and lemon juice for glaze. A serving has 200 calories, 6.7 grams of carbs, 3.1 grams of fiber and 15.8 grams of fat. Get the recipe.

Whether you go for one of the options that’s sweet and closer to the traditional dish, or try the chicken wings, we hope you enjoy these fabulous recipes!
