Dr Pepper Zero Sugar Recalled for Containing Sugar

Food recalls happen all the time. It’s usually over salmonella or E.coli, and we cover it if we think it’s relevant to our customers.

Pepsi is recalling more than 19,000 cases of Dr Pepper Zero Sugar because the cans were filled with full-sugar soda. It is a voluntary recall for 12- and 24-packs of the 12-ounce cans that are labeled Dr Pepper Zero Sugar. The recalled batch has the product code XXXXRS05165 and a “best by” date of Feb. 16, 2026. No other Dr Pepper products have been recalled.

The cans contain 39 grams of sugar each. That could pose a health risk to folks who need to limit their sugar intake.

The FDA classified the recalls as Class II, saying it is a “situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

While the risk might be remote, 39 grams of sugar is a lot when you haven’t accounted for it! The soda being recalled was sold in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. If you bought some, you can return the cans to the store where you got them. The soda isn’t contaminated with bacteria or any foreign matter. So, if you have a full-sugar soda drinker in your life, you can pass it on to them. Just be sure to get it out of your home.

We have shared many recipes for low-carb and no-carb drinks over the years. But we recognize that some people love soda. We always recommend sticking to sugar-free sodas if they are your beverage of choice. Some research has questioned how safe they are. However, if you have blood sugar concerns, a sugar-free drink is better than one with 39 grams of sugar in 12 ounces of fluid.

Finding a diet that works for you is about finding balance. If you like diet soda, that’s okay. You should enjoy the foods you want in moderation. But soda shouldn’t be your only source of hydration. Water is always better as it is calorie-free, carb-free and free of additives. Water is the only neutral thing you have in your diet! And, if Dr Pepper Zero Sugar is your treat of choice and you live in Florida, Georgia or South Carolina, please check the batch number to make sure you know what you are drinking. You can enjoy almost any food safely, but not if you don’t know what it is!
