How Asthma and Blood Sugar Impact Each Other

Summer can be rough for people with asthma. Heat can worsen symptoms, cause flare-ups or even trigger attacks. Dehydration can cause inflammation that increases mucus and tightens airways.

Summer is also a time of wildfires, bonfires, pollen, dust mites and mold. That’s why it’s essential in the summer to use your medications correctly, store them correctly, listen to your body and know where your rescue inhaler is.

It’s also important to understand the interplay of blood sugar and asthma. Unchecked high blood sugar can reduce lung function and make breathing harder. Sustained high blood sugar causes inflammation that can scar lungs, damage nerves, and change blood flow, making the lungs work harder.

A diet high in sugar can raise oxidative stress in the body. That is when free radicals and antioxidants are imbalanced. That harms cells. The lungs are vulnerable to oxidative stress as they are continually exposed to oxygen. That stress hams lung tissue. It can also damage the immune system, making the lungs more susceptible to raspatory infections that can cause asthma attacks.

Managing your blood sugar concerns can help protect your lungs to prevent harm to your lungs. Staying active and giving up smoking is also beneficial because it prevents problems and helps maintain healthy blood vessels.

Some medications to help blood sugar concerns also improves asthma. If you take medication for your blood sugar concerns, or any other health concerns, you shouldn’t make changes without discussing it with a doctor. They can help you make a health plan that fits all your needs.

The relationship between asthma and blood sugar is a two-way street. High blood sugar can worsen asthma, even leading to hospitalization. But, severe asthma can make blood sugar harder to manage. Taking care of both, especially during the hotter, more difficult months, is a must to be sure you stay healthy and reach your goals.

Staying hydrated is essential all summer long. It’s also essential for blood sugar health and lung function. By staying hydrated with water and other sugar-free beverages, you can help your asthma and blood sugar concerns.

You can enjoy your summer no matter what health concerns you may have! You just have to plan ahead and listen to your body. When you take care of your body, it takes care of you, and you can join in all the fun to have a great time!
