Four Pastry Recipes Safe to Enjoy—Savory and Sweet!

Reconciling dietary wants and health goals is hard. Some food becomes forbidden fruit that we long for and when we do give in — at parties or other special events — we might overindulge and feel guilty later. For those of us with blood sugar concerns, it can not only be a setback but impact our health. Pastry is one of those things many of us miss. But the carbs can be too much for us to eat on a day to day basis. Today we are sharing four excellent pastry recipes for you to enjoy — two savory and two sweet!

Quiche with Spaghetti Squash Crust

Last month, we shared some excellent spaghetti squash recipes! We were looking at pasta replacements. This recipe was so different we wanted to feature it in a separate post. It’s ersatz pie crust! Who would have thought you could make a crust from squash? The people over at EatingWell Magazine! What we love most about this tomato and feta quiche is that you can swap out the filling as you see fit. The recipe as is, without out substitution, has 201 calories and 15 grams of carb per slice of quiche. Get the recipe here.

Sausage Rolls

Everyone’s favorite appetizer, pigs in a blanket, is back with this recipe from Ditch the Carbs. Using their Fat Head pasty recipe, they have created everything from crackers to pizza with few carbs! This pastry is made from mozzarella, cream cheese, egg and almond flour and isn’t low calorie but it is low carbs. One serving (a sixth of the whole recipe) has 470 calories but only 5.1 grams of carbs. They are a special occasion food and not for every day, but when you do enjoy them, you won’t have to worry about your blood sugar. Get the recipe here.

Cheese Danish

If you are anything like us, bakeries call to you with danishes. We love danishes. But we hate the high carbs. That is where cloud bread comes in! Usually, cloud bread has savory spices and contains zero carbs. We like the savory type, a version of which can be found on the A Spicy Perspective website. This dessert recipe from Low Carb Yum uses a sweet dough to make light danishes. Each danish has only 120 calories and 1.1 grams of carbs! Get the recipe here.

Flaky Pastry Pie Crust

Flaky pastry has around 19 carbs and 220 calories per serving. That’s before you add any fillings! This recipe, by Paola van der Hulst, has 189 calories but only four grams of carbs. That’s pretty darn great for pie crust! We suggest using baking Truvia or something similar for your pie filling. When noncaloric sweeteners are in a baking blend, it means their texture is close to granulated sugar. The blends emulate the feel of sugar as well as the taste. Get the recipe here.

We hope you enjoy these recipes and feel empowered to bring more pastry into your life! Bon appétit!
